Abstract

In the school environment, students should be able to control their speech. This study aims to describe the types of violations and adherence to language politeness and their functions in teacher-student communication interactions in class VII Indonesian language learning at SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Sambi. This type of research uses a qualitative descriptive method. Data collection techniques in this study used observation, note-taking, and documentation. As for data processing, it uses the steps of collecting data, coding data and grouping data and analyzing it using the extralingual equivalent method with the Equalizing Comparison (HBB) technique, according to the politeness principle according to Geoffrey Leech. Forms of language politeness in Indonesian language learning interactions are found in teacher and student speech in class is 1). Wisdom Maxim, 2). Generosity Maxim, 3). Maxim of Praise, 4). Maxim of Humility, 5). Maxim of Consensus / agreement, 6). Sympathy maxim. The data analyzed in this study are 80 utterances. The first analysis is about the form of language politeness with politeness principles. After obtaining data from the analysis of politeness forms, the next step is to classify speech into 1). Speech function states. 2). The speech function asks. 3). The function of commanding speech 4). The speech function of apologizing and 5). The speech function criticizes either obeying or violating the speech function.
