Abstract

Overuse of social media can cause symptoms of depression. One factor that causes depression is social comparisons. Uncontrolled social comparisons in social media can lead to problems that are common to depression. The subject has not been much researched so the purpose in this study is for 1) the correlation of social comparison and depression in social media users, 2) look at the social comparisons contribution to depression, 3) knowing different depression is derived from gender, 4) knowing the categories of social comparisons and depression. The population in this study is an active student at Muhammadiyah University in Surakarta , which is active using social media. As many as 31.488 people with sample sampling techniques are sampling with the respondents' 401 respondents. Data gathering uses the BDI scale and Iowa Netherlands Comparison Orientation Measure (INCOM) scale. Studies show a correlation between social comparisons and depression with coefficient value (rxy) (-0,279) and the contribution value is 7,8%. It was based on tests with t-test that there was no difference between depression in male and female students with result 0,324 (p > 0,05). The depression category shows a severe depression of 18.2%, with a mild 20.2% and a normal 39.9%. The results of the social comparison category indicate 70,3% high, 27,7% moderate, and 2% low. The implications of this study are the importance of compiling programs for social comparisons to prevent depression.
