Abstract

The aims of this study are: (1) to describe classificational misconceptions in solving math problems in class VIII students; (2) describe correlational misconceptions in solving math problems in class VIII students; (3) describe theoretical misconceptions in solving math problems in class VIII students. This type of research is qualitative research. The research subjects consisted of four grade VIII students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Pati. Data collection techniques used are observation, interviews and documentation. The results showed that there were three types of misconceptions experienced by students, including: (1) classificational misconceptions experienced by students, namely errors in selecting problem solving procedures and errors in grouping known elements in the questions to determine problem solving. The causative factor is that students do not understand the elements in the spatial structure; (2) correlational misconceptions in students, namely errors in connecting the properties of prisms with prism shapes, errors in using formulas according to problem problems, and errors in writing formulas due to misunderstanding the reading of the questions. The reason is that students cannot connect concepts to solve problems and students do not understand the questions well; (3) the theoretical misconceptions experienced by students are errors in determining the unit of surface area, errors in multiplication operations of root forms, misinterpreting side area with blanket area, and errors in using the formula for surface area. The reason is that students do not re-checking their answers, understanding of the material is still lacking, and they misunderstand the use of formulas.
