Abstract
Semiotics is a study of sign including icon, index and symbol. The research aims: (1) to describe the meanings of the travel icons in the airport, and (2) to describe the reason using the icons. The theories are used the Saussure’s theories and the Barthes’ theories. Saussure emphasized his theory in analyzing the sign using the signifier and signified criteria. Then, Barthes emphasized his theory on the myth that derived from the denotation and the connotation level. The type of this research is qualitative descriptive type. In collecting the data, the writer applied the documentation and observed methods in the airport. The several steps are done to analyze the data. In analyzing the meaning, the steps are: analyzing the signifier and analyzing the signified. Then, analyzes the reason use the steps are analyzing the denotation level, analyzing the connotation level, and analyzing the myth. The results of this research show that: travel icon at the airport has several meanings that are referring to: (1) The travel icon shows the directional signal, such as the icon of the ticket counter, waiting room, and check-in counter. (2) The travel icon shows the location signal, such as the icon of the information counter, the restroom, and the nursery room. (3) The travel icon shows the warning and prohibition signal, such as the icon of direction to keep clean, no enter the certain room, and no smoking. Meanwhile, the reason is based on the color of each icon are the travel icon shows the operational signal with the yellow and white, the common facility and agreed signal with the blue, the warning signal with the yellow, and the prohibition signal with the red.
