Abstract

In the industrial world, aluminum is one of the most frequently used materials. Aluminum alloy 5083 series is a type of material that is widely used in the shipping industry, because it has good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. There is one type of connection that is often used in the industrial world to connect two or more metal parts is the welding technique. This study aims to determine the strength of the aluminum 5083 metal joint by using GMAW. The aluminum 5083 metal plate is welded with different amperage current variations, which aims to determine the effect of electric current on the tensile strength and microstructure of the material. From the results of the research conducted, the results of tensile strength with a current of 100 A have a tensile strength of 6,768 N / mm2, an increase in current of 110 A of 11,554 N / mm2, and at a current of 120 A there is an increase of 14,533 N / mm2, this shows that the greater the current strength in GMAW welding can increase the tensile strength of the aluminum metal plate 5083. The results of the SEM microstructure show that at a current strength of 100 A there is a formation of a cavity in the HAZ area due to the small current strength so that the penetration of the filler with the parent metal is not optimal, while in the strong current of 110 A there is a slight formation of the cavity in the HAZ area due to the medium current strength so that the penetration of the filler with the parent metal occurs quite well, and at a current strength of 120 A there is the formation of a solid cavity in the HAZ area due to a large strong current when compared to other currents and has a higher heat input so that the penetration of the parent metal and filler metal occurs well.
