Abstract

The aim of the research is to improve critical thinking skills through the application of contextual learning on Pythagorean theorem material in class VIIIB students of SMP Negeri 5 2020/2021. This research is a classroom action research using the Kemmis and Taggart modes. The subjects of this research were mathematics teachers, researchers and class VIIIB students of SMP Negeri 5 Blora, which consisted of 32 students. The object of this research is the ability to think critically about the Pythagorean theorem in contextual learning. Data collection techniques in this study were interviews, observations, tests, field notes, and documentation. Students' critical thinking skills are obtained from the percentage of critical thinking skill indicators achieved through tests in the form of essay questions that contain critical thinking skill competencies. The indicator of the success of this research is when students analyze 65%, synthesize 63%, recognize and solve problems 60%, conclude 55%, and evaluate 52%. Based on the results of the assessment analysis from the initial conditions to cycle 2, it was obtained the results of students' ability to analyze 43.750% to 75%, synthesize 34.375% to 71.875%, recognize and solve problems 18.750% to 71.875%, ability to conclude 15.625% to 71.875%, and ability to evaluate 12.500 % to 68.75%. Based on the data obtained, it can be concluded that the application of contextual learning can be used as an alternative to improve students' critical thinking skills.
