Abstract
This research is motivated by a phenomenon of declining character during the COVID-19 pandemic. Especially during the validity period of face-to-face learning (PTM) in educational institutions. In this case the researcher connects the problem of character with the religious character of students, where in planting religious characters it is necessary to have a role from teachers, especially Islamic religious education teachers. In instilling the religious character of Islamic religious education teachers require strategies that will be used by teachers. With this strategy, it is hoped that the religious character of students can experience significant development. This study aims to describe the strategy of PAI teachers in instilling the religious character of students during the COVID-19 pandemic at SMP Negeri 1 Surakarta. This research is a qualitative research which is a type of field research with a phenomenological approach, which uses data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews and documentation. In this study, the validity of the data was tested using data triangulation techniques, sources and techniques. The data analysis technique uses data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and then drawing conclusions. The results showed that the PAI teacher's strategy in instilling the religious character of students was to integrate PAI learning, habituation strategies through giving mutaba'ah sheets, facilitating learning to read the Qur'an on Monday donations, 5 S habituation and habituation of the dhuha, zuhur and dhuhur prayers. Fridays in congregation, exemplary strategies through activities such as introducing Muslim personalities by showing short films, teachers giving examples of good personalities and complying with health protocols. punishment strategies, punishments given by PAI teachers to students who do not obey the rules, and strategies for celebrating Islamic holidays. In instilling religious character there are supporting and inhibiting factors, supporting factors from the enthusiasm of students in participating in Islamic Education learning and religious activities, family support in all school activities, cooperation between PAI teachers and general education teachers, as well as adequate school infrastructure, while the inhibiting factors from the lack of awareness of students, the family environment and the surrounding environment.
