Abstract
Islamic education is a process that can preserve, transfer, internalize, transform and instill Islamic norms to students. The theory of Islamic education is that which regulates the learning process so that an educator has a reference in the transfer of knowledge to students who adhere to the Islamic aspect. This study aims to examine the theory of Islamic education in the perspective of Nurcholish Madjid as an Indonesian Muslim intellectual. This study uses qualitative research methods that are descriptive-analytical with inductive thinking flow. The process is in the form of finding concepts based on facts from both primary and secondary data sources, while this inductive way of thinking is also used to analyze phenomena or problems that are general in nature to become more specific. Based on the results of the study, three main points of the theory of Islamic education in the perspective of Nurcholis Madjid were found, namely: the theory of human religious education, the theory of modern education, and the theory of Indonesian education. The three theories of education are interrelated with each other with the aim of building a modern Indonesia as well as Islamic and humanist. Keywords:
