Abstract
The purpose of this research was to explain the types of assessment and the authenticity of assessment in writing used by the eleventh-grade teacher of SMA Muhammadiyah PK Kottabarat Surakarta. In conducting this research, the researcher applied descriptive qualitative study. The research subject was an English teacher of grades XI at SMA Muhammadiyah PK Kottabarat Surakarta. The technique for collecting data were interview, observation, and documentation. In analyzing the data, the researcher applied data reduction, data display and drawing conclusion. This research found that the aspects of writing assessed by the teacher were cognitive aspect and writing skills aspect. The types of cognitive aspect for writing assessment were multiple choice, fill in the blank, and short answers. Meanwhile, the type of writing skills aspect was using a writing sample called essay. In addition, the assessment of writing skills used by the teacher reflects an authentic assessment. The teacher used essay which considered as one of the types of authentic assessment. Also, the method used by the teacher required students to perform, create, and do the task that is relevant to real-life situations. The results show that in conducting the writing assessment, the teacher used various types of assessment to determine the way in which students understand how to write according to the material and to evaluate the effectiveness of the delivered material. On the other hand, the teacher already conducted authentic assessment of writing.
