Abstract

In an increasingly fast global era, where direct contact between individuals is more limited, all of which are resolved with advanced technology, the negative impact is that we are lulled by instant features so that we forget the extraordinary impact of direct interaction with surrounding individuals, can hone tolerance, feel what other people feel, which we know with empathy. The purpose of this study is to determine the differences in a person's empathy in terms of formal education level and gender. The research hypothesis is that there is a difference in empathy based on the level of formal education between students and college students, where the age of students has higher empathy than students, and there are differences in the empathy of men and women between students and students, where the empathy of women is higher than that of men.. The subjects of this study were high school students aged 15-19 years and students aged 20-30 years in Pati City. The sampling technique is purposive sampling. This type of research is quantitative with data collection tools using an empathy scale. The data analysis used is the different sample t-test and the Mann-Whitney test. Based on the results of the Mann-Whitney test data analysis, the z value is -2.835; p = 0.007 (p<0.05) which indicates that there is a difference in empathy based on the level of formal education between high school students and university students in Pati City, where the level of formal education of students has higher empathy than students. Likewise, based on the results of the analysis of the sample t-test, the t-value is -6.342; p = 0.000 (p<0.05) there is a significant difference between male and female empathy between students and university students, where female empathy is higher than male. With the conclusion that there are differences in empathy between high school students and university students in Pati City in terms of formal education level and gender.
