Abstract

Hubb or usually known as love is a nature bestowed by God upon His creatures which guides them to find light path, meaning, and spirit of life. Proofs of Allah having given feeling of love to human (especially the believers) are stated, at least, in 11 verses of the Quran. In this fast-changing era, people tend to neglect the established religious values, one of which is how to love the Creator who has granted His grace in this life (hablun min Allah), as well as how to materialize our love for others and give each other a helping hand in this world (hablun min an-Naas). The forms of love, along with its urgency for humanity, are studied according to Tafsir Al-Misbah by M. Quraish Shihab and Tafsir Al-Azhar by Buya Hamka. This study aims to focus on the concepts of love according to Quraish Shihab and Buya Hamka, as well as to compare the similarities and differences between those two great figures' concepts of love. This is a library research that utilizes Tafsir Al-Misbah by M. Quraish Shihab and Tafsir Al-Azhar by Buya Hamka as its primary sources, whilst journal, thesis, scientific article, book, or other works related to the topic of love act as the secondary sources. The data will be analyzed using analytical qualitative descriptive method. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that the concept of Al Hubb according to Muhammad Quraish Shihab in his Tafsir Al-Mishbah is that basically Allah surely loves all His servants, and the level of Allah's love to His servants depends on the level of servants' love itself. Those who repent will gain forgiveness and reward from Him and those who are pious will obtain reward and grace both in this world and then in the hereafter. Whereas Buya Hamka wrote in Tafsir Al-Azhar that Allah only loves the servants who love Him, and if the servant truly loves Him, then their path towards Him shall be considerably convenient.
