Abstract
This study aims to determine the effect of variations in the content of magnesium (Mg) nodular cast iron on the microstructure and fracture surface of nodular cast iron impact test specimens. This research uses FCD (ferro casting ductile) as a starting material which is then melted in a melting furnace. The process of forming round graphite cast iron is carried out using an open ladel system, namely the variation of the addition of FeSiMg 0 grams (raw material), 50 grams and 100 grams which is placed at the bottom of the ladle with a capacity of 15 kg just before the molten iron is poured into the ladle. The results showed that the more magnesium (Mg) content, the resulting graphite grains tended to decrease and tend to shrink, more pearlite and less ferrite. Meanwhile, from SEM testing that each specimen has a mixed fracture, namely clay and brittle fractures. The fracture surface shows the more magnesium content the more brittle fracture areas are according to Kartika's research (2019). However, specimen 3 appears to have more clay fracture areas, this isdue to the uneven mixing of FeSiMg.
