Abstract
Deficit is a condition where expenditure is greater than income, which means a balance tends to be negative. This is due to an increase in imports and a decrease in exports which might result in a trade balance deficit. The exchange rate determined in the foreign exchange market also affects the payment of the budget deficit where when the rupiah exchange rate weakens against the dollar, the payment of the deficit spending will be higher. This study aimed to estimate the effect of GDP, imports, exports, and exchange rates on the deficit spending using time series data from 1998-2019 from the World Bank, Bank Indonesia, and Indonesian Ministry of Finance. The data was then analysed using Error Correction Model (ECM). The results of this study indicated that import had a positive effect and export had a negative effect on deficit spending in the short term. In the long term, GDP and export was proven to have a negative effect and import a positive effect on deficit spending. Meanwhile, exchange rate was proven to have no effect in the short or long term on deficit spending in Indonesia. The advice that can be given from this research is that the government is expected to reduce import activities through a policy of limiting import quotas and increasing import tariffs. In addition, the Indonesian government must expand international market opportunities to increase exports.
