Abstract
Writing is an important skill to support other skills in language learning. This study aims to know the types of authentic assessment in writing used by lecturer in English Education Department in IAIN Surakarta, the authenticity of assessment of writing class in English Education Department in IAIN Surakarta, and to know the problem faced by lecturer in applying authentic assessment in English Education Department in IAIN Surakarta. The research uses descriptive qualitative research by interview, document and observation to obtain the data. The subjects of the research are the lecturers of writing class of English Education Department. Technique of analyzing data based on Miles and Huberman for qualitative research are: data collection, data reduction, data display and conclusion. The result of the research presents two types of authentic assessment, namely: formative and summative assessments. The Kind of writing skill assessment used in formative text is portfolio, and the kind of writing skill for summative test is writing an academic essay. The researcher also finds that the authenticity of assessments used by lectures in both summative and formative are high. The problem faced by lecturers in applying authentic assessment is the limitation of time.
