Abstract

Indonesia's literacy rate scored was not too good. According to World’s Most Literate nation, Indonesia is ranked 60th from 61 countries, while based on PISA, Indonesia is ranked 62nd from 70 countries. As a country in which most of its population are Muslims, the bad record spoils the reputation of Islam as a religion in which doctrine encourages literacy. This research wants to know how Al-Qalam verse 1 inspires one of the autonomous organizations in Muhammadiyah, Ikatan Pelajar Muhammadiyah (IPM), in doing its literacy movement. This research uses the qualitative method as well as utilizes the living Qur’an approach. The main data is gathered from interviewing the Muhammadiyah Student Association's cadre. Moreover, the secondary data comes from documents that can support the main data. The result of this research tells that Surat al-Qalam verse 1, especially Hamka’s interpretation about it, influences the IPM cadre’s way of thinking. Al-Qalam verse 1 becomes the inspiration for literacy movements in IPM. this research found that there are four literacy movement forms run by the IPM cadre. Those are the student's community, reading corner, discussion club, and training
