Abstract

This research analyzes anxiety using the psychoanalysis theory by Sigmund Freud in the novel Human Acts (2016), written by the Korean novelist Han Kang. This study aims to identify the types of anxiety, describe how anxiety is depicted in the novel Human Acts, and reveal the author's reasons for writing this novel. This research is a literary study. The type of data in this study is in text, including narration, dialogue, and monologue. Data collection is done by reading and note-taking techniques. Qualitative data analysis is applied in this study, and data validity is carried out using time and investigator triangulation. This study indicates that there are three types of anxiety shown by the characters in the novel human acts, namely reality anxiety, neurotic anxiety, and moral anxiety. Second, anxiety is described in the novel with respiratory problems, insecurity, shaking, avoidance behavior, and anxiety and restlessness. And lastly, the author's reason for writing the novel Human Acts is that he wants to dedicate this novel and he wants to express his regret to the victims of the 1980 Gwangju uprising, besides that this novel is a manifestation of questions about human violence.
