Abstract

The rapid development of the textile industry has had a negatif impact on the environment, especially the use of synthetic dyes. The purpose of this study was to utilize natural dyes and determine the effect of the type of mordant and the length of time of dyeing on the result of the dyeing. The research was conducted by extracting ketapang leaves using water. The research treatments were mordant type and immersion time. The types of mordant used are mordan alum, tunjung, lime, lime, and acetic acid. The immersion time was 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 60 minutes and 75 minutes. Dye was applied to a cotton cloth. To see the effect of each treatment, the dyed cloth was assessed by 15 respondents by performing an organoleptik test and the data analysis technique was performed by using multiple ANOVA analysis or Twoway Anava analysis. The quality of the dyed cotton fabric is seen by testing the color sharpness and color fading of the fabric. The results showed that the type of mordant and the length of time of immersion affected the sharpness of the color where the value of Fcount = 5,531 was significant at α = 0.000 or <0.05 which meant that it had a significant effect, while the color fading had a significant Fcount = 4.234 at α = 0.000 or <0.05, which means that it had a significant effect. . The best color sharpness is to use mordan tunjung for all variations of the dyeing time of the cotton fabric. The length of time of dyeing also affects the sharpness of the color and the color fading of the cotton fabric, the length of time of dyeing that produces the best color sharpness is 75 minutes. This is because the longer the dyeing time, the more dye will be bound by the mordant to the cotton fibers.
