Abstract

Backoground : Obesity is accumulation of excess fat due to an imbalance of energy intake with the energy use for a long time. Indonesia is a country with a relatively high number of obese sufferers, both in adults, adolescents and children. Orlistat is suspected to be one of the drugs for treating obesity. Objective : This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of orlistat on weight loss in obese patients. Method : Literature review method and the research sample was obtained from a search using the pubmed database, Springer link, and science direct. Result : There were 3,178 articles then excluded restriction criteria, six articles were reviewed. Analysis six articles from the intervention of several subjects found that metformin group decreased by 2.1kg , diet group decreased by 4 kg and orlistat group decreased 5.5kg in three months, while sibutramin group decreased 3.28kg in six months. There are three articles comparing orlistat with placebo, one of which shows that orlistat group lost 6.82kg while placebo group lost 3.50kg within six months. All articles reviewed showed good clinical improvement in obese people with orlistat administration. Conclusion : Orlistat given in obesity cases provides clinical improvement in the form of weight loss.
