Abstract
Gray cast iron is one of the most popular cast metals used in the metal casting industry. Gray cast iron is often added with other elements to make its characteristics fit the needs, this process is called inoculation. Inoculation is carried out at the time of casting, when the cast iron is in a liquid state. This study aims to examine the characteristics of gray cast iron due to the effect of Si 3% on the casting process. This study uses three testing methods, namely hardness testing, microstructure, and SEM-EDS testing with the casting process using metal molds and sand molds. The results obtained in the brinell method hardness test, the hardest part of cast iron is in the lower cut cast iron product section of the metal mold, which is 260 BHN and the lowest hardness is the top cut of the cast iron specimen with sand mold, which is 197 BHN. The microstructure of the metal, intermediate and sand mold specimens were almost the same, it was seen that the longitudinal graphite with the pearlite phase was the most dominant, but in the lower cut sand mold, the ledeburite phase to cementite appeared. In the SEM-EDS test, it was seen that the Si element dispersion did not differ too much between the molds, still around 3%.
