Abstract
Introduction : Psyllium fiber is a type of insoluble fiber that is processed from the husks of the seeds of a plant called plantago ovata. The effect of inadequate intake of psyllium fiber contributes to irregular bowel movements and constipation. Fiber can prevent or reduce constipation because it absorbs water as it passes through the digestive tract so that it can increase the size of the stool. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of psyllium fiber on the incidence of constipation in adults, which is to increase bowel habits and reduce constipation. Methodology: Articles were selected from the Google Scholar database and the web journal Nutrients with the search keywords of “psyllium intake and constipation” or “Effect of psyllium on constipation” or “constipation and soluble/insoluble fiber” in adults. The first keywords in the Google Scholar and Nutrient search were adjusted to the theme, respondent characteristics, type of research and the last 10 years (2011-2020) indexed by Scopus Q1-Q4. Searching for other articles by looking at the next page, it was found 5 articles with the theme of psyllium and constipation. The five articles that were selected to be the most relevant contained the administration of psyllium to the constipated subject with the dose and duration and how the effect of psyllium administration on constipation. Articles indexed to Scopus Q1 included 4 articles, articles indexed to Scopus Q2 included 1 article, and articles were obtained for the period of 2011, 2016, 2018, and 2019. Results: The results showed that psyllium fiber with doses of 3.5 grams, 3.6 grams and 7 grams significantly affected the incidence of constipation as indicated by the frequency of stools more than 3x/week and the consistency of the stools were not hard. Conclusion: Psyllium is able to overcome the incidence of functional constipation by increasing the frequency of bowel movements and stool consistency.
