Abstract

Industries in Indonesia is increasingly growing and developing in various regions. One of them is the bottled water industry. The industry has been operating since 2003 by taking groundwater as its main raw material from the Sigedang spring in Polanharjo District to be precise in Ponggok Village, which incidentally is the upstream area. PT. Tirta Investama’s continuous water withdrawal has resulted in a decrease in water flow from year to year which has an impact on the sustainability of agriculture in the downstream area. The purpose of this research is to examine the impact in the existence of PT. Tirta Investama on the social and economic conditions of farmers as well as the sustainability of agriculture in Kepanjen Village, Delangggu sub-district. The method used in this study is a survey and interviews using questionnaire media to respondents who work as farmers who cultivate rice field with total of 12 respondents. The result of this study indicate changes in farmers’ income decreased after PT. Tirta Investama operates. Farmers’ income decreased after PT. Tirta Investama operates due to the additional cost of rice production which is allocated to meeting the needs of irrigation water. On the other hand, the number of conflictsbetween farmers increase after PT. Tirta Investama operates which is caused by problems in the distribution of irrigation water from the upstream. The impact on social conditions is an increase in the numbers of conflicts between farmers caused by fighting over river flows from the upstream. The impact on the sustainability of agriculture is the decrease in irrigation water discharge by 76%. An increase in the average production cost after PT. Tirta Investama’s operations amounted to Rp. 854.167 or 62%.
