Abstract
Heat treatment on aluminum alloys aims to improve its mechanical properties. One of the heat treatments that can be done is artificial aging. This research was conducted to determine the effect of artificial aging on the impact test results on aluminum alloy (Al-Si) re-melting of four-wheeled OEM wheels. This research uses aluminum from OEM wheels for four- wheeled vehicles which are remanufactured using the method sand casting. The artificial aging process is carried out with the initial step of solution heat treatment, namely the test specimen is heated to a temperature of 500°C and held for 5 minutes. After that, the process was carried out quenching with a variety of media quenching for well water, SAE 140 oil, and ice water <10°C. Then the test specimens were heated again to a temperature of 180oC and held for 4 hours. After the holding time is met, then the test specimen is cooled slowly while remaining in the oven. In chemical composition testing, it is known that the main elements of OEM wheels are Al (93.59%) and Si (6.09%). In the impact test using the method Charpy, the impact price raw material of wheels after the process re-melting has decreased, from the impact price of 0.215 J / mm2 to 0.051 J / mm2 . After the process, artificial aging the highest impact price increase occurred in materials with media. The quenching SAE 140 oil increase was 98,24% from the impact price of 0.051 J / mm2 to 0.1011 J / mm2 . The impact price after the process artificial aging cannot exceed the impact price of the raw wheel material. This is because the heat treatment carried out in this study has not been able to match the heat treatment that has been carried out by the wheel manufacturer.
