Abstract

The purpose of this study (1) To describe the form of politeness of language in the novel according to Leech in the speech of Nyai Ontosoroh in the Human Earth Novel (2) To describe the politeness scale of language in the novel according to Leech in the speech of Nyai Ontosoroh in the Human Earth Novel. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The data in this study are in the form of texts, sentences and discourse containing the principle of politeness of language according to Leech in Nyai Ontosoroh's speech contained in the novel Bumi Manusia by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. The data collection techniques in this study also use the method of reading with reading techniques and note-taking techniques, while the data analysis techniques in this study are data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions / verification. The results of this study indicate that the politeness of language according to Leech in the speech of the character Nyai Ontosoroh in the Novel Bumi Manusia found as many as 16 utterances. Which consists of 5 Witnesses of Wisdom, 1 Witness of Generosity, 5 Witnesses of Appreciation, 1 Witness of Simplicity, 2 Witnesses of Consensus and 2 Witnesses of Conclusion. The politeness scale of language in the novel according to Leech in the speech of Nyai Ontosoroh in the Novel Bumi Manusia is 8 politeness scales, which includes 3 politeness scales Cost-benefit scale (scale of loss and profit), 6 modesty scale Optionality scale (optional scale), 1 scale politeness Indirectness scale (scale of unsustainability) and 1 scale of politeness Authority scale (authority scale).
