Abstract

Rat control carried out by the government is a way to suppress the rat population that can harm humans. Rat control in traditional markets has not been able to reduce the high rat population. This is probably due to the ignorance of market traders, especially grocery traders, how to effectively control rats in a traditional market environment. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of rat control in the grocery stalls in Surakarta's traditional markets. The research method used was an experiment with a pre-post test method with control group. The population of this research is all food stalls in Surakarta traditional market. Sampling was taken by simple random and purposive sampling until 28 samples were obtained. Variations in the experiment included installation of a single live trap, installation of vetiver oil, education on rat control and integrated control of rat density. Rat density was measured using a single live trap for 2 nights. The sample location is a place that has a high rat density (> 1). The changes in density before and after the experiment were recorded and tested using statistical analysis ANOVA. The results from statistical tests showed that there was a significant difference (p = 0.003) in the density of rats before and after controlling the mice. Control of rats that showed changes was control using a single live trap which resulted in a reduction in rat density by 50% and integrated control by 83.4%. Therefore, integrated rat control is needed to reduce rat density in traditional markets to be effective and successful
