Abstract

Diaspora shows how people maintain their identity amidst the differences in the majority culture found in the migration destination. Madurese are one who has a high level of mobility. The phenomenon of migration carried out by the Madurese has been going on for several centuries. This research explores the study of the Madurese diaspora in Solo City to determine the characteristics of the Madurese living in Solo, how the migration travel process is, and the factors that cause migration. The objectives of this study are: (1) to analyze the characteristics of the Madurese in Solo, (2) to analyze the process of the migration journey of the Madurese in Solo, (3) to analyze the factors that influence the migration of Madurese in Solo. Researchers used qualitative research methods. Determination of respondents in filling in the interview guidelines using the snowball method with the criteria of respondents who have lived for 10 years or> 10 years or Madurese who have a Solo Resident Card. Techniques to analyze in this study used transcript analysis techniques, spatial analysis and Individual Life History analysis. The results of the study indicated that: (1) The characteristics of Madurese in migrating to Solo were mostly (32%) aged 31-40 years with the majority (82.5%) male. Most of the respondents (60%) have graduated from SD/MI schools. The area of origin and work of the respondents was dominated (67.5%) from Bangkalan Regency with an average of (37.04%) working as scrap metal. For the length of stay of the respondents in Solo, most of them (47.5%) have lived between 10-20 years with an average stay of 22 years. Pasar Kliwon is a sub-district in Solo City that is mostly occupied (50%) by Madurese migrants. Whereas the income generated by Madurese from working in the informal sector is dominated (92.5%) by income above the UMR in Solo and the culture that is maintained at the place of migration (accent language, culture of returning home and order in worship), (2) history of travel There are four types of migration carried out by Madurese migrants, namely Madura-Solo, Madura-Java-Solo, Madura-Luar Java-Solo, Madura-Luar Negri-Solo, (3) the main factor causing the Madurese to migrate is economic. The driving factor in the area of origin (Madura) is the general condition of Madura Island which is less supportive for economic development, such as the land on Madura Island is alkaline by a layer of limestone which causes less potential in developing agriculture and the pull factor in the destination area (Solo) the existence of high economic opportunities. The characteristic of the migration carried out by the Madurese to Solo is a chain migration consisting of very close family relationships, relatives and neighbors. Madurese who had migrated to Solo City earlier became a source of informants and became a migration channel for their family and close relatives who still live in Madura to participate in migrating to Solo City
