Abstract
This research is proposed at analyzing the refusal utterance especially used in Action Movies The Transporter 3. The refusal utterances are analyzed to investigate the politeness patterns of their use, the intentions of employing them, and the reasons of their use. The writer employs documentation in collecting the data. He watches the movie repeatedly and finds the data. After finding the data, he signs and makes checklist on it to find the words, phrases, or sentences showing refusal utterances. After that, he classifies them into politeness patterns of refusal utterances using politeness strategy of Brown and Levinson, continues to clarify the intentions of refusal utterances using speech act theory by Austin in Jaworski (locution, illocution, and perlocution act), and then clarifies the reasons of employing refusal utterances by using speaking formula of Hymes. Based on his data analysis, finally the writer gets some conclusions. First, the result of the study shows that there are politeness patterns in uttering refusal: bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and indirect off-record strategies. All of those patterns used by the speakers are intended to maximize their goal of doing refusal. Second, all of utterances have different intentions based on locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts. The intentions are representative, directive (requesting, advising, commanding, warning), commissive (informing, promising, committing), expressive (dislike, threatening), and declaration. Third, the speakers employ the refusal to show anger, disagreement, freedom, hope, intimacy, power, and solidarity.
