Abstract
This research is mainly concerned with the teaching method applied by the teacher at the first grade of SD Muhammadiyah 16 Surakarta in Academic Year 2019/2020. This is conducted to describe the prosedure applied by the teacher in using flashcard for teaching English, the advantages of flashcard for learning English, and disadvantages of flashcard for learning English. This is a descriptive qualitative study. To collect the data the reseacher used observation, interview, and document analysis. While to analyze the data the researcher applied three main stages; namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing as stated by Miles and Huberman. Triangulation technique was used in this research to validate the data. The findings of the research are as follows: 1) describing family members, 2) responding to instructions which is very simple regarding form, and 3) copying English writing which was very simple precisely. The advantages of flashcard for learning English are the teaching was more interesting; it can help to focus the students’ attention; flashcards can be used based on the theme of lesson; teacher can give variations in teaching learning process, making the students exciting. The media make them understand the English vocabulary easily, motivate students to be active in teaching learning process, make the students remember the words better; the pictures in flashcards can help the students avoid boredom and the students’ attention. Third point, flashcard give some contributions for the students competences and achievement.
