Abstract
This study aims to describe the mistakes made by students in solving economic mathematics problems based on Polya's steps in terms of gender differences in students of the Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta in the 2019/2020 academic year. The study was conducted on 4 5th semester students of Muhammadiyah University Surakarta Mathematics Education. The type and design of research in this research is descriptive qualitative. Data collection techniques used in this study are in the form of test questions, interviews and documentation. Data accuracy uses triangulation method. Data analysis techniques use three processes including data reduction, data presentation, and data verification. Based on the results of data analysis shows that: (1) Students who are the subjects of the study can be said to be able to understand the existing problems. This is evidenced by the ability of students to be able to write whatever is known but not write whatever is asked. (2) In the second stage, which is planning problem solving, students if they are less able to plan problem solving will have an impact on the next stage because of the formula students can calculate what is asked. (3) At the stage of carrying out the plan, mistakes that are often made by the research subjects are mistakes in counting numbers or there are steps that are missed when calculating. (4) In the last stage, which is checking again, the results obtained by the majority of students do not do this due to insufficient time.
