Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of metaphors and meanings contained in Dream Theater song lyrics. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The object of data in this study is the metaphor found in Dream Theater song lyrics. The data source of this research is the song lyrics of Dream Theater. The method used by researchers is documentation in collecting data and analyzing data. Researchers used the theory of metaphor types from Lakoff and Johnson (1980) and the theory of Geoffrey Leech (1974) to analyze the meaning of metaphors in the lyrics of the song Dream Theater. The results of this study are metaphors found in Dream Theater song lyrics, namely compound metaphor (5.56%), absolute metaphor (11.11%), active metaphor (38.89%), dormant metaphor (11.11%), implicit metaphor (22.22%) , and personifying metaphors (11.11%). The meanings found are contextual meaning (27.78%), affective meaning (38.89%), and connotative meaning (33.33%) with what is often found is affective meaning.
