Abstract

Carburizing pack is a method of hardening steel by adding a carbon element to the steel. The purpose of this study was to analyze the microstructure and surface hardness of ST 40 steel after carburizing with a temperature of 780ºC for 4 hours. The wood charcoal used is mixed wood charcoal with an average particle size of 130,278 μm² and 515,735 μm². There was a decrease in the number of carbon particles after the carburizing process. Carbon with an average particle area of 130.278 μm² was lost by 27.66%, while carbon with an average particle area of 515.735 μm² was lost by 2.67%. Microstructure testing aims to determine the phase that the steel has after experiencing the carburizing process. Hardness testing aims to determine changes in the level of hardness of the material used.
