Abstract

Among the many people that exist on earth, Allah chose Muslims as the khaira ummah or the best people because the Muslims had done good things, forbade bad deeds and had faith in God. Seeing the current situation, where crime, corruption and hoaxes are common in Indonesia, it makes us need to re-explore the concept of khaira ummah, especially Indonesia is a country with a Muslim majority population. M Quraish Shihab and Mahmud Yunus are mufassir originating from Indonesia who are the representatives of the current generation and early generations of Indonesian Muslim people who are involved in the study of the Qur'an. It becomes relevant when we refer to their interpretation to look back at the concept of khaira ummah and their similarities and differences according to both. So that in this research later it is hoped that it can add to the scientific treasury and provide insight into the concept of khaira ummah from the perspective of Indonesian commentaries, and is expected to be translated into the joints of life. To understand the interpretation of M Quraish Shihab and Mahmud Yunus on the concept of khaira ummah and their similarities and differences, this study uses a descriptive-comparative method. In this case, M Quraish Shihab interprets the khaira ummah as the best people issued or manifested for humans from the time of the prophet Adam to the end of time because of his good deeds, those that are considered good by the community also in accordance with divine values and always prevent deeds the abominable that is contrary to the divine values and believe in Allah by following His guidance and the guidance of His apostles and holding fast to the ropes of God and not divorced. While Mahmud Yunus interpreted the ummah khaira as Muslims who were born into the world with good character and good behavior and that was done solely in faith in God. M Quraish Shihab and Mahmud Yunus have similarities about the characteristics of khaira ummah and have differences regarding the object and time of the continuation of khaira ummah.
