Abstract

Falls is a sudden loss of balance which is one of the problems in the elderly group. A study says the amount and dose of psychoactive affect the incidence of repeated falls in the elderly. Psychoactive polypharmacy is very common, several studies have researched the impact of the use of psychoactive drugs on the risk of falling. The purpose of this study was to identify patterns of use of psychoactive drugs in the elderly and identify the corellation of the use of psychoactive drugs to increase the risk of falls in the elderly. This study was an observational study using the Cross sectional study method for the period March-September 2018. Data was collected prospectively using questionnaires and interviews to obtain fall history data and retrospectively to complete and confirm the interview data by looking at the data in the patient's medical record. The inclusion criteria in this study were outpatients Dr. Moewardi Surakarta, age ≥ 60 years who use or not use psychoactive, and complete medical record data. Data were analyzed descriptively for patient characteristics, and analytic with Chi-Square and Odss Ratio to see the relationship between psychoactive use and the risk of falls. The results obtained as many as 210 (58.8%) use psychoactive drugs, and the remaining 147 (41.2%) do not use psychoactive drugs. There is no relationship between the incidence of falling risk with the use of psychoative drugs indicated p value> 0.05 with a value of OR 1.51 (IK 0.87-2.64).
