Abstract

The purpose of this study was (1) to know the completeness of the 5W + 1H elements in the news text written by students of class VIII-B of SMP Negeri 1 Surakarta, (2) knowing what efforts had been made by students of class VIII-B and teachers of SMP Negeri 1 Surakarta to overcome difficulties in writing news texts according to the 5W + 1H element. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The results of this study indicate that of the 31 students, there are 16 students whose news text elements are not yet complete and the remaining 15 are complete. Some of the efforts made by teachers and students in writing news texts are (1) making brief notes of the 5W + 1H elements, (2) taking topics that are around them, (3) conducting interviews to strengthen the contents of the news text, and (4) conducting retraining to strengthen student understanding.
