Abstract

The distressed personality (Type D) is an emerging risk factor in cardiovascular disease (CVD). Type D personality is a distressed personality type or distress which includes two stable personality traits, negative affectifity (NA) and social inhibition (SI). Type D is defined as the co-occurring tendencies to experience increased negative emotions and to inhibit self-expression in social interactions. Evidence is gathered that Type D can also be a risk factor for adverse outcomes in all groups of CVD patients, including patients with heart failure. The purpose of this study was to determine the type D personality description in patients with heart failure. This research is a quantitative study using descriptive survey method with quota sampling technique involving 70 heart failure patients in UNS Hospital using the DS14 questionnaire which has been tested for validity and reliability at RSUD Dr. Moewardi Surakarta and the results obtained that the questionnaire is valid and reliable. The results showed that the majority of respondents were in the age range 46-65 years old, were male, were married, had other comorbidities other than heart failure, had illnesses for less than 5 years and were on NYHA I. The results also showed 38, 6% of respondents have personality type D. Suggestions for further research is expected that other researchers can examine the types of personality types found in patients with heart failure.
