Abstract

The major problem of this study is how the definition of family is reflected in Johanna Spyri’s Heidi based on sociology of literature. The objectives of this study are to analyze Johanna Spyri’s Heidi novel based on its structural elements and based on the sociology of literature. The type is qualitative. The primary data is taken from the Heidi novel by Johanna Spyri, while the secondary data is taken from book and the internet. The object is the novel Johanna Spyri’s Heidiconsist of 320 pages. The method of collecting data is library research. The technique of analyzing data is descriptive. The result of the study shows that based on the structural analysis, it is apparent that in this novelJohanna Spyri conveys a moral message that family is very important because people need a group of loyal supporter. And based on the sociological analysis, it is evident that in this novel, Johanna Spyri reflects the social reality of the Germany society, either social, political, economic, religion, or cultural aspects.
