Abstract

Garbage is one of the problems that occur in Indonesia. Even now the Indonesian government is campaigning about rubbish emergencies, especially on plastic waste. With the increase in population each year, the amount of waste generated is increasing. Waste that is not managed properly at the Final Disposal Site (TPA) will accumulate every day. This has been made by some people as a job opportunity for those who want to work as scavengers. Of course, the presence of scavengers in the landfill can reduce the amount of garbage that accumulates every day. This study aims to: (1) analyze the characteristics of waste pickers in TPA Putri Cempo, Solo. (2) analyzing the role of scavengers in reducing the volume of waste in the TPA Putri Cempo, Solo. The sampling method uses random sampling where all scavengers in TPA Putri Cempo have the opportunity to become samples. Data collection using a questionnaire. The results of this study indicate the characteristics of a scavenger in TPA Putri Cempo Solo - average age is 40 years old with the majority being male (60%), the majority (50%) scavengers come from within the city of Solo, namely from Jatirejo, Mojosongo Village and the majority low education (elementary and junior high). The average amount of garbage collected by a scavenger in Putri Cempo TPA is 112 kg per day with plastic waste and plastic bottles as the most collected garbage. Meanwhile, the percentage reduction in types of plastic waste and used bottles is 80% of all types of waste. Scavengers play a role in reducing waste in Putri Cempo Solo TPA as much as 39,2 ton per day or 13% of the total garbage that enters.
