Abstract

The major problem of this study is to elucidate the portrait of Carrie’s misery living in poverty reflected in Theodore Dreiser’s novel Sister Carrie. The objectives of the study are; to analyze the structural elements of the novel and to analyze social aspect of the novel based on sociological approach. In conducting this study, the researcher uses qualitative research in which the data are based on primary data of the novel Theodore Dreiser’s Sister Carrie itself. While secondary data are Theodore Dreiser’s biography, the social historical background of American society in the late nineteenth century and other data which deal with the research. The study comes to the following conclusions. Firstly based on the structural analysis of each element, it shows that the character and characterization, setting, point of view, plot, style and theme are related to each other and form the unity into good quality of a novel. Secondly based on the sociological approach, there is close relation between the literary work and the social reality underlying it, such as a portrait of a man who lives in poverty. These approaches are applied in order to get the appropriate analysis and answer the problem. The writer finds that living in poverty is full of struggle to survive
