Abstract

This research deals with compound sentence in the novel of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The aims of this research are to identify the type of translation and to describe the message equivalence of compound sentence in the English Indonesian translation in the novel Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone into Harry Potter dan Batu Bertuah. The writer employs the descriptive qualitative as the type of the research. The data source of this research is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone into Harry Potter dan Batu Bertuah novels. The method of collecting data is documentation technique. The technique of analyzing data of this research are comparing between source language and target language, analyzing the data based on the type of translation of compound sentence, analyzing the data based on the equivalence of translation of compound sentence in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone into Harry Potter dan Batu Bertuah novels, and drawing the conclusion and suggestions based on the data analysis. From the data analysis the writer finds there are eight types of translation occur in the data, namely: closest natural equivalence, essentially literal translation, free translation, interpretive translation, literal translation, loan translation, thought-for-thought translation, and word-for-word translation. The equivalences of translation are denotative equivalence, connotative equivalence, text-normative equivalence and pragmatic equivalence.
