Abstract
The objectives of the study are to describe: 1) the implementation of ACTIVE to the second grade of SMP 1 Al Islam Kartasura; 2) the improvement of teaching reading through ACTIVE to the second grade students of SMP 1 Al Islam Kartasura. This research is an action research. The subject of the study is the students of SMP 1 Al Islam Kartasura, especially the second grade. This class consists of 32 students as the respondent of the research. The object of the study is teaching reading using ACTIVE to the second grade students of SMP 1 Al Islam Kartasura. The data are collected through observation, document and interview. The data analysis is done using qualitative analysis. Based on the analysis, the writer draws some conclusions as follows: 1) the implementation of ACTIVE to the second grade of SMP 1 Al Islam Kartasura was done through Activating prior knowledge, Cultivating vocabulary, Teaching for comprehension, Increasing reading rate, Verifying reading strategies, and Evaluating progress; 2) the improvement of teaching reading through ACTIVE to the second grade of SMP 1 Al Islam Kartasura can be seen from the mean score of the pre-test and post-test in each cycle. In the first cycle, the pre-test mean score is 74.84, meanwhile in the second cycle is 78.43. In the first cycle, the post-test mean score is 77.81, meanwhile in the second cycle is 89.09.
