Abstract
This study aims to determine the temperature, cooling time, and elemental changes with a CE Meter, determine the density, know the physical and mechanical properties, find out the shrinkage, and determine the defects of castings. The research method used in this test is gray cast iron as a material for making molds, the sand used in making molds is sand or river sand. The results obtained from this test are Carbon Equivalent Value which is 4,29% so it is called hypoeutectic. The value of the density in the results of castings by side products (A) 6.84 grlcm3, side products (B) 6.89gr /cm3, and bottom products 7.37gr cm3. The average hardness at some points reached 78,72 HRB. In the microstructure, some graphite is formed in the form of splinter, which causes low ductility. For the chemical composition of the castings, there are 19 elements with 4 most dominant elements, namely carbon (C) 3,47%, silicon (Si) 2,41%, manganese (Mn) 0,43% and copper (Cu) 0, 26%. Shrinkage pattern (A) 1,86%, pattern (B) 2,61%, and bottom pattern 6,15%. While cast defects that occur through visual observation are pinhole defects and wrong flow defects.
