Abstract
The major problem of this study is to reveal how Ray Ferrier overcomes his anxiety in Spielberg’s War of the Worlds. The objectives of the study are to analyze the movie based on its structural elements, and to analyze movie based on psychoanalytic theory. In conducting this study, the researcher uses qualitative research, in which the primary data source is War of the Worlds movie, and the secondary data source includes resources related to the research such as books of Psychological theories, movie script, commentaries, and the relevant information. The technique of data collection in this study is library research and documentation. The technique of data analysis in this study is descriptive technique. The results of the analysis show that firstly, based on the structural analysis, it is clear that in this movie, the director wants to convey a moral message that it requires a sense of danger in order to make an individual realize the responsibility. Secondly, based on the psychoanalytic analysis it is evident that in this movie, the director shows that major character’s behavior reflects the dynamic interaction between id, ego, and superego resulting in different types of anxieties.
