Abstract
This study aims to determine the effect of mold temperature variations on the squeeze casting process on density, porosity, hardness and microstructure with aluminum raw material from used pistons. In this study, using 3 mold temperature variations, namely: 150 ° C, 200 ° C and 250 ° C with pouring temperature at 700 ° C. Chemical composition testing using Emmision Spectrometry (ASTM E-1251). Observation of porosity is done by macro photography using a digital microscope and comparing the results of each variation of the print temperature. Hardness testing uses the Vickers test (ASTM E-384). Testing the microstructure of the results of castings using a metallographic microscope (ASTM E3-11). Chemical composition test results show that this material contains (Al) 87.13%, (Si) 6.14%, (Zn) 2.87%, (Fe) 1.79%, (Cu) 1.507% and other elements up to 100% according to ASTM B-85 standards classified into Aluminum Al-Si (Aluminum - Silicon) 443.0. The results of the calculation of density and porosity at a mold temperature of 150 ° C are 2.66 gr / cm³ and porosity is not visible. At a mold temperature of 200 ° C the density is 2.64 gr / cm³ and the porosity is slightly visible but the porosity that occurs is rather large. Whereas the density and porosity at a mold temperature of 250 ° C is 2.60 gr / cm³ and many porosity is visible but small. This shows that the mold temperature is directly proportional to porosity and inversely proportional to densit. The average hardness test results of castings at mold temperatures of 150 ° C, 200 ° C and 250 ° C are 124.5 HVN, 112.9 HVN, and 108.86 HVN. So it is found that the mold temperature is inversely proportional to the hardness value of the cast object. This can be seen from the micro structure where the higher the temperature, the more flexible the structure of silicon grains formed.
