Abstract
GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) welding is a type of electric arc welding with a gas shield. This study aims to determine the mechanical properties of low carbon / mild steel AISI 1008 after undergoing the GTAW welding process by using a current variation of 100 A, 120 A, and 140 A on the polarity of AC and DCEN. This welding uses AWS A5 tungsten electrodes. 12-98 and ER70S-G welding or filler wire. The type of joint used is butt joint with the type of seam is single v groove with an angle of 30o. The standard used for the manufacture of tensile test specimens and testing is ASME IX, for testing chemical compositions using the ASTM A751-01 standard. For hardness tests using the ASTM E92 standard and metallographic tests using the ASTM E407-07 standard. The results of tensile tests produce the highest average voltage values found in the DCEN polarity with a current of 140 A of 370,102 MPa, and the highest average strain value also exists at the DCEN polarity of a current of 140 A of 19.070%. For the hardness test the weld metal area produces the hardness value with the highest average in the DCEN polarity with a current of 140 A of 226.2 VHn, while in the HAZ region the highest hardness value is in the DCEN polarity with a current of 140 A of 122.7 VHn. Seen from micro photographs shows a striking phase change, along with the increase in current affect the phase change. If the greater the current is given, it appears that the area affected by the heat of the phase formed is dominated by perlite, while the area affected by heat with a small current formed is dominated by ferrite.
