Abstract
The casting process is the process of making objects by melting metal and pouring it into a mold cavity and allowed to freeze. One of the factors that influence the results of metal castings is the preheating of the mold used. The purpose of this study was to determine the chemical composition contained in aluminum casting material, to determine the effect of permanent mold preheating with variations in temperature of 1000C, 150 0C, 200 0C on the microstructure and hardness of the product. The preheating process is the process of heat treatment of a permanent mold before the molten metal is inserted into the mold. The results obtained from this test are on the chemical composition there are some elements consisting of Al 86.91%, Si 8.11%, Zn 2.95%, Fe 1.08%. Judging from the elements present in this material can be classified as aluminum alloy aluminum metal (Al-Si). Viewed from the micro structure, the 200 0C variation of crystal preheating looks smaller than the variation of 100 0C preheating and 150 0C preheating variation, the smaller the grain diameter, the higher the hardness of the material. The highest hardness is found in the preheating variation of 200 0C, which is 80.50 BHN, while in the preheating variation of 100 0C is 76.00 BHN and the preheating variation is 150 0C, which is 77.50 BHN.
