Abstract
Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is one of solid state welding method where welded joints are formed without any addition of filler metal. The design of pin cross section in the welding tool becomes a very important parameter in FSW welding. This research was conducted to determine the effect of cross section pin tool shape on FSW Al-Mg with copper welding. The welding process used variation of the cross section shapes of the pin tool namely cylinder, triangle, and square with a tool rotational speed of 900 rpm and a feed rate of 30 mm / minute. The material used in this study was Al-Mg with copper with a length of 150 mm, a width of 70 mm and a thickness of 3 mm. Furthermore, the results of welded joints were carried out in a tensile testing, vickers hardness testing, and microstructure photos.. The results of this study indicate that the difference in pin tool affects the mechanical properties of friction stir welding. The results of tensile strength in the shape of the shape of square tool pin have the highest tensile strength which is equal to 152,27 MPa, while the lowest tensile strength is in the form of taper cyliner pin tool which is equal to 41,16 MPa. The largest strain value occurs in the shape of a triangular tool pin that is 9,24% and the lowest in the form of taper square tool pins of 5,5%. Furthermore, the highest hardness value is in the form of a cylinder tool pin at the welding center with the amount of 137 VHN while the lowest hardness value in the center of the weld of square pin tool form is 93 VHN. Moreover, the microstructure photo results of the cross section triangle pin tool produces a micro structure that is finer than the tapered or square cylinder pin tool.
