Abstract

Land is the basis of a structure or construction, be it building construction or road construction, which often creates problems if it has bad properties. The land in Bendo Village, Sukodono District, Kabuaten, Sragen, is a clay soil that has high shrinkage and plasticity. So it needs to be improved by stabilizing the soil using the addition of 5% lime and coconut shell charcoal powder presentations 0%, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5% and 10% of the weight of the soil sample. This study was conducted to determine the effect of the addition of lime and coconut shell charcoal powder on physical and mechanical properties of the free compressive strength parameters. The results of physical properties test of native soil stabilized with lime with a fixed percentage of 5% and coconut shell charcoal powder with the percentage of 0%, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, 10% tend to decrease for the value of water content, specific gravity (Gs), limit liquid (LL), Plasticity Index (PI), pass filter No. 200 whereas in the shrinkage limit (SL), the plastic limit (PL) has increased. According to the AASHTO method, soils are included in the A-7-5 classification with the type of material which is generally clay soil and general assessment as a basic soil that is moderate to bad. In the classification using the USCS method, soils are included in the MH group which means inorganic clay soils with high plasticity. The results of the mechanical properties of the standard Proctor soil test mixture of 5% lime and coconut shell charcoal powder presentations 0%, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5% and 10% experienced an increase in volume weight value and a decrease in optimum water content. The lowest value of free compressive strength is found in the original soil with a value of 0.260 kg / cm2 while the largest value of free compressive strength is in the soil with a mixture of 5% lime and 10% coconut shell charcoal powder that is equal to 1,780 kg / cm2 which is included in the state of the springy clay.
