Abstract
This study aims to determine the effect of permanent mold variations and red sand molds in alumunium casting with a size of 7,5 x 7,5 x 1 cm with the addition of lead (Pb) of 20% on hardness and microstructure This study used a used alumunium material with a size of 7,5x7,5x1,0 cm and 20% lead which was remelted using a crucible furnace. The initial casting process prepares a permanent mold and a red sand mold then melts the alumunium alloy back into the crucible furnace. After the alumunium alloy melts it can then be poured into a permanent mold and a red sand mold. The next process is to wait for the hardened castings and dismantle the castings In testing Brinell hardness castings products with a mixture of lead by 20% using a permanent mold aimed at a hardness value of 88,832 BHN, while the red sand mold showed a hardness value of 85,551 BHN. Then in testing the microstructure of the permanent mold visible smaller crystal diameter, while the red sand mold has a larger crystal diameter, then the chemical composition of the permanent mold showed Alumunium (Al) of (83,90%), Silicon (Si) (10,5%), Zinc (Zn) (4,20%), Copper (Cu) (0,121%), and Black Lead (Pb) (0,0890%). Whereas the red sand mold shows Alumunium (Al) of (84,90%), Silicon (Si) of (7,0889%), Zinc (Zn) of (3,1369%), Black Lead (Pb) of (2,1885%) and Copper (Cu) of (1,7498%).
