Abstract
Corn cob is one of the main lignocellulosic wastes found in Indonesia. However, the use of corn cob in the community is still rare. Corn cobs have cellulose content of 41%, hemicellulose 36%, and lignin 16%. In this study, corn cobs were used as raw material for pulping. The process of making pulp from corn cobs consists of raw material preparation, soaking, pulping process, and washing process. Soaking was done by adding aquades, 3%, and 10% sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution for 1, 3, and 7 days. Whereas the pulping process was carried out by soda method, by adding NaOH solution 3%, 7%, and 10% at time variations of 30, 45, and 60 minutes. From the results of the study, the optimum conditions for the pulping process were found in the sample of 10% NaOH solution and 60 minutes cooking time with the kappa number of 8.7625 and the lignin content of 1.3144%. For the effect of soaking time and soaking solution, the optimum conditions for the samples soaked for 3 days using aquades with the kappa number of 6.6976 and lignin levels of 1.0046% were obtained. The results indicate that there is a direct relationship between the concentration of cooking solution and cooking time for the kappa number and lignin level. In addition, the soaking time and the concentration of the soaking solution also affected the kappa number and lignin content of the corn cobs.
