Abstract
Metal casting has numerous methods. The most often used method is sand casting. Besides, there is also a method known as lost foam casting, which uses a pattern of Styrofoam materials. This research aimed to find out the comparison of the effect of method variation of surface’s roughness, the shrinkage, the density, the porosity, the micro structure, and the value of materials’ hardness. Used aluminum or wreckage, which was remelting in furnace, was used in this research. There were two variations of method used in this research, they were sand casting (conventional) and lost foam casting. The result of chemical composition testing, the materials that would be compared had composed of (Al) 78,32%, (Si) 12,0903%, (Cu) 3,7737%. The surface of sand casting products was softer than lost foam casting ones. The persentage of sand casting’s shrinkage was 1,28%, while the shrinkage of lost foam casting was 0,81% only. The density of sand casting was 2,646 gr/cm 3 , while lost foam casting’s was only 2.543 gr/cm . The porosity of sand casting was fewer than lost foam casting’s. In the testing of micro structure, the variation of particle’s shape of sand casting was smaller than the lost foam casting’s. The sand casting products had 98,538 VHN while the lost foam casting products had 91,328 VHN only. Therefore, the hardness of sand casting products was harder than lost foam casting ones.
