Abstract
Peanut shells is one of the lignocellulosic wastes found abungantly in Indonesia. However, the use of peanut shells in the community is still rare. Peanut shells have a cellulose content of 63.5% and lignin of 13%. The fiber components owned by peanut shells can be used to manufacture pulp raw materials, making glucose, cellulose powder, and alternative energy such as bioethanol. In this study, peanut shells were used as raw material for pulping. The process of making pulps from peanut shells consisted of raw material preparation, soaking, pulping process, and washing process. Soaking was done by adding aquadest, 3% and 10% sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution for 1, 3, 7, 8, 9, and 10 days. Whereas, in the pulping process was carried out by soda method, namely by adding NaOH solution 3%, 7%, and 10% at a time variation of 30, 45, and 60 minutes. The results of the study, the immersion time and the concentration of the soaking solution affected the kappa number and lignin content of peanuts. The optimum conditions for the pulping process were found in the sample of 10% NaOH solution and 60 minutes cooking time with the kappa number of 9.7902 and lignin content of 1.4685%. The results of the effect of soaking time and soaking solution obtained the optimum conditions in the sample soaked for 8 days using a 10% NaOH soaking solution with the results of the kappa number of 7.9587 and the lignin content of 1.1938%.
